I was honored to be able to create this artwork celebrating the life of Deanna, who was a native New Yorker residing in LA as a professional dancer, choreographer and educator. She deeply impacted others with her unconditional love, vivacious spirit, animated humor, contagious laugh, and a generosity that knew no limits.

This artwork was unveiled for the first time at the DM Art Festival in Salt Lake City, Utah today. Artwork, shirts and merchandise are available in full color and black and white versions, both with and without the wording “I find pieces of you in every song I listen to…” The full collection can be browsed here.

“Our Dee lived life with a genuine heart and incredible passion. Passion for her art, her students, food, fashion, helping others, and above all else, her family and friends. Those fortunate enough to know her were inspired by her divine movement, creativity and vibrant soul. She made everyone around her feel like they mattered and the world was a brighter place with her in it.

We are heartbroken over the tragic loss of Deanna, but her love and light live on in every person she so deeply touched.”

‘Cause when it’s over,
All that matters is the love you gave away.

Drift Away – Song Lyrics & Fine Art

December 22nd, 2016 by Nikki Smith

Drift Away by Nikki Smith

I was happy to find out recently another way that my artwork really connects with music lovers: when paired with their favorite song lyrics or an inspirational quote. I discovered a very popular meme of my artwork paired with the lyrics to “Drift Away” (written by Mentor Williams, made famous by Dobie Gray and covered by tons of amazing musicians and bands.) So, I decided to make an “official” fine art version of the meme. Feel free to share this artwork socially (credit and a link highly appreciated) if it speaks to your soul. And if you really love it (or know someone who would), this is also available as a fine art print or home decor item here.

“Give me the beat boys

and free my soul

I wanna get lost

in your rock and roll

and drift away…”

And of course, a shout-out to the country music lovers with these alternate lyrics:

Drift Away Country by Nikki Smith

“Give me the beat boys

and free my soul

I wanna get lost

in your country song

and drift away…”

The Country version of this lovely artwork is available here, or you can find the original art (with no lyrics) here.

This was a fun adaptation to do with my artwork, so look for more in the future. If you have seen a favorite meme of my artwork or have a fun idea for one, do let me know!

Chase Your Dreams

Responsible pinning and social sharing with credit and a link appreciated.

For any girl who is chasing a big dream, this artwork is an inspirational reminder that you can achieve anything you set your mind and heart to. Just put one skate in front of the other and breathe…

A kind thank you to my very talented niece, figure skater Isabelle (one of the most hard working and talented young ladies I know!) depicted above doing a spiral while ice skating.  Thanks also to photographer Hank An who was able to capture this fleeting moment during her performance on film, which later served as the inspiration for my artwork.

Finally, a huge thank you to all of my patrons, fans, and fellow art lovers who are so supportive and encouraging to me as I chase my own artistic dreams.  THANK YOU!  Your support means the world to me.

Ground Control to Major Tom – Out of this world artwork!

“Ground Control to Major Tom” is a digital painting created stroke by stroke by Nikki Smith. This piece was inspired by the song “Space Oddity” by David Bowie, recently recorded *in space* by astronaut Chris Hadfield on the International Space Station in a captivating video:

(Thanks, NASA, for the reference photos!)

I love the lyrics of the song, too:

“Ground control to major Tom
Ground control to major Tom
Take your protein pills and put your helmet on
(Ten) Ground control (Nine) to major Tom (Eight)
(Seven, six) Commencing countdown (Five), engines on (Four)
(Three, two) Check ignition (One) and may gods (Blastoff) love be with you

This is ground control to major Tom, you’ve really made the grade
And the papers want to know whose shirts you wear
Now it’s time to leave the capsule if you dare

This is major Tom to ground control, I’m stepping through the door
And I’m floating in a most peculiar way
And the stars look very different today
Here am I sitting in a tin can far above the world
Planet Earth is blue and there’s nothing I can do

Though I’m past one hundred thousand miles, I’m feeling very still
And I think my spaceship knows which way to go
Tell my wife I love her very much, she knows
Ground control to major Tom, your circuits dead, there’s something wrong
Can you hear me, major Tom?
Can you hear me, major Tom?
Can you hear me, major Tom?
Can you…
Here am I sitting in my tin can far above the Moon
Planet Earth is blue and there’s nothing I can do”

(Lyrics by David Bowie)

After a recent trip to NASA with the kiddos I discovered that I hadn’t yet shared this artwork on my blog. Shame on me! NASA was a great experience for our kids, who especially loved the “Angry Birds In Space” area. Way to make learning fun, NASA! Here is one of my little astronauts now:
