Artwork on the cover of Flair Magazine!

February 21st, 2014 by Nikki Smith

I am soooo excited to share this news! My artwork is on the cover of Flair Magazine!
Flair Magazine Spring/Summe 2014This Spring/Summer 2014 issue is devoted to music, and I am thrilled that my Music Lovers’ series of artwork is featured! Julie LaFargue Giles interviewed me for the article and we talked about my artistic journey and how music inspires my artwork. If you are local to the Brazos Valley or surrounding communities, you can pick up a copy of the magazine at many local establishments (it will be delivered over the next few days).  The cover artwork is “Sweet Jenny Bursting with Music” and the back cover features “Guitar Siren.”  There are several other music fine art pieces from this series in the magazine, too.

Artwork from my Music Lovers’ series will be on display at First Fridays in Bryan, Texas later this summer (details to be announced soon).  If you would like to be informed of the gallery show opening, please sign-up for my newsletter and I’ll keep you posted.  No spam (I promise), just amazing art and a bit of personality.  🙂

To check out the complete series or to purchase artwork featured in the magazine, head over to the gallery for my Music Lovers’ artwork series where you will find these images plus many more.  Fine art prints are available on canvas, specialty fine art papers, acrylic, and metal in sizes up to 45″ x 60″.

If you would like to commission a one-of-a-kind, exclusive portrait, just get in touch with me.  And if you love art and music as much as I do, we really should connect!  You can connect with me on Google Plus, Facebook, Pinterest, Twitter, About.Me and, of course, in person.  I love meeting fellow art and music enthusiasts!

(Pardon me while I do a little happy dance!)

Interview by the Houston Chronicle

August 22nd, 2013 by Nikki Smith

After receiving the FAA Artistic Merit “Tony” Award earlier this summer, I was contacted for an interview by Megan Mattingly-Arthur, writer for the Houston Chronicle. The full-page interview was published yesterday in Houston Chronicle’s “Faces in the Crowd” special feature. You can read the full article online here.

Houston Chronicle interview, 08/21/13 (preview)

The artwork featured at the top of the article is “Sweet Jenny Bursting with Music” (below) with fine art prints available here. This is one of my favorite pieces!

Also mentioned in the article is my award winning “Guitar Siren” (below) with fine art prints available here.

Finally, my “Wee Planet” photography of downtown Bryan (below; fine art prints here) was the photo that first launched me on this path and led me to consider myself seriously as an artist.

Looking back, it is amazing to see just how much my artwork has grown over the years.

I’m walking on sunshine this morning! 😀 I’m also really craving some art studio time so I can get busy and create some new artwork!

Found Poetry Self-Portrait

January 9th, 2013 by Nikki Smith

My Found Poetry self-portrait is published in the current Jan/Feb ’13 issue of Cloth Paper Scissors magazine!

Found Poetry Self-Portrait

To create this mixed-media self-portrait I rescued a severely damaged and abandoned book and upcycled it into fine artwork, selecting a word here and there and piecing them into unique, original poems and stories. Here are a few samples (but not all) of my poetry in this piece:

“one raindrop fell,
and then many,
a perfect circle expanded
perhaps a little breathless
you chose this moment
to kiss me”

“she licked
some rain
from her lips
in slow-motion arcs
a sudden thought
a kiss. a smile.

“just dance.
crazed like fire-flies.
it was like a vision
it made me feel
sexy as hell.”

“I was deeply in love with
my own idea of love.”

And, surrounded by my swirling breath in gold paint: “I imagine no more words were necessary”

I highly recommend viewing the piece close-up to read further poetry hidden within the artwork.  You can do so by visiting this link and clicking anywhere on the artwork for a detail view.

Artwork featured on FineArtAmerica.com home page!

May 9th, 2012 by Nikki Smith

Wow, I’m honored!  My “Guitar Siren” has been featured on the home page of FineArtAmerica.com!

I unveiled this series of digital watercolor pieces last week.  Since then, three pieces in the series have won top awards in five fine art competitions.   “Guitar Lover’s Embrace” has won 1st place in the Life Is What Happens – Lost And Found competition and tied for 1st place in the Digital Manipulated Nude Photography contest; “My Guitar can SING” won 2nd in the Digital Mixed Media contest and 2nd in the Musical Instrument Abstracts competition, and  “Guitar Siren” (pictured above – model: Sarah Fleming) has tied for 2nd in the Altered Digital Photography competition.

Then this evening I was thrilled to learn that Fine Art America staff have chosen to feature Guitar Siren on their home page!  If you aren’t familiar with Fine Art America, they have over 2.7 million pieces of artwork by over 100,000 artists.  To be singled out for a feature on the home page is truly staggering.  I don’t know what to say — I’m so honored!  (Understatement!)  This to me is a real validation of my artwork and my drive to create.  My art is connecting and resonating with the people who view it.  What more can any artist ask?

I have been hard at work (OK, hard at play) creating more pieces in this musical series.  There are several more in my Music Lovers gallery , and I will leave you now with a glimpse of one new piece:
