Artwork on the cover of Flair Magazine!

February 21st, 2014 by Nikki Smith

I am soooo excited to share this news! My artwork is on the cover of Flair Magazine!
Flair Magazine Spring/Summe 2014This Spring/Summer 2014 issue is devoted to music, and I am thrilled that my Music Lovers’ series of artwork is featured! Julie LaFargue Giles interviewed me for the article and we talked about my artistic journey and how music inspires my artwork. If you are local to the Brazos Valley or surrounding communities, you can pick up a copy of the magazine at many local establishments (it will be delivered over the next few days).  The cover artwork is “Sweet Jenny Bursting with Music” and the back cover features “Guitar Siren.”  There are several other music fine art pieces from this series in the magazine, too.

Artwork from my Music Lovers’ series will be on display at First Fridays in Bryan, Texas later this summer (details to be announced soon).  If you would like to be informed of the gallery show opening, please sign-up for my newsletter and I’ll keep you posted.  No spam (I promise), just amazing art and a bit of personality.  🙂

To check out the complete series or to purchase artwork featured in the magazine, head over to the gallery for my Music Lovers’ artwork series where you will find these images plus many more.  Fine art prints are available on canvas, specialty fine art papers, acrylic, and metal in sizes up to 45″ x 60″.

If you would like to commission a one-of-a-kind, exclusive portrait, just get in touch with me.  And if you love art and music as much as I do, we really should connect!  You can connect with me on Google Plus, Facebook, Pinterest, Twitter, About.Me and, of course, in person.  I love meeting fellow art and music enthusiasts!

(Pardon me while I do a little happy dance!)

Chase Your Dreams

For any girl who is chasing a big dream, this artwork is an inspirational reminder that you can achieve anything you set your mind and heart to. Just put one skate in front of the other and breathe…

A kind thank you to my very talented niece, figure skater Isabelle (one of the most hard working and talented young ladies I know!) depicted above doing a spiral while ice skating.  Thanks also to photographer Hank An who was able to capture this fleeting moment during her performance on film, which later served as the inspiration for my artwork.

Finally, a huge thank you to all of my patrons, fans, and fellow art lovers who are so supportive and encouraging to me as I chase my own artistic dreams.  THANK YOU!  Your support means the world to me.

Ground Control to Major Tom – Out of this world artwork!

“Ground Control to Major Tom” is a digital painting created stroke by stroke by Nikki Smith. This piece was inspired by the song “Space Oddity” by David Bowie, recently recorded *in space* by astronaut Chris Hadfield on the International Space Station in a captivating video:

(Thanks, NASA, for the reference photos!)

I love the lyrics of the song, too:

“Ground control to major Tom
Ground control to major Tom
Take your protein pills and put your helmet on
(Ten) Ground control (Nine) to major Tom (Eight)
(Seven, six) Commencing countdown (Five), engines on (Four)
(Three, two) Check ignition (One) and may gods (Blastoff) love be with you

This is ground control to major Tom, you’ve really made the grade
And the papers want to know whose shirts you wear
Now it’s time to leave the capsule if you dare

This is major Tom to ground control, I’m stepping through the door
And I’m floating in a most peculiar way
And the stars look very different today
Here am I sitting in a tin can far above the world
Planet Earth is blue and there’s nothing I can do

Though I’m past one hundred thousand miles, I’m feeling very still
And I think my spaceship knows which way to go
Tell my wife I love her very much, she knows
Ground control to major Tom, your circuits dead, there’s something wrong
Can you hear me, major Tom?
Can you hear me, major Tom?
Can you hear me, major Tom?
Can you…
Here am I sitting in my tin can far above the Moon
Planet Earth is blue and there’s nothing I can do”

(Lyrics by David Bowie)

After a recent trip to NASA with the kiddos I discovered that I hadn’t yet shared this artwork on my blog. Shame on me! NASA was a great experience for our kids, who especially loved the “Angry Birds In Space” area. Way to make learning fun, NASA! Here is one of my little astronauts now:

Sunflower Breezes, I’m breathless…

This sunflower has me breathless. Blowing in the wind, a delicate and determined spirit, I can almost feel the warm breeze and smell the scent of sunflowers in the air….

Continuing my collaboration with wildflower photographer Steven Schwartzman: his photographic portrait of a sunflower in the wind (with permission) inspired this piece.  If you fall in love, both the original photograph and the artistic rendition are available as fine art prints.  I hope you enjoy the fruits of this collaboration as much as I do!  Happy Holidays, everyone!

Silverpuff Dandelion Wishes

Do you remember the childhood magic of blowing dandelion puffs and making a wish? I suspect my mother would secretly cringe at the thought of more dandelions springing up in our yard. It was pure bliss for me, however; a few moments full of peace and wonder as the seeds drifted away on the wind and the sunshine warmed my skin. I was delighted to be able to recapture that feeling in this artwork, part of my collaboration with wildflower photographer Steven Schwartzman. You can see his original photo which inspired this artwork below:

Both the original photograph and my artistic interpretation are available as fine art prints by clicking on the images above. Or as a custom phone cover, too, if you are like my good friend who snapped one up as a Christmas present the moment I posted it to Facebook yesterday!

Speaking of which, I’ve finally joined the rest of the civilized world and now own a smart phone for the very first time. It arrived yesterday (yay!) and I’m still learning how to use it. I can’t wait to personalize it with a custom phone case and artwork that reflects my personality.  Now I just have to decide which artwork to choose.  Wish me luck!  🙂
